Red-tailed Hawks are keen adaptors and survivors. I am always cheered to spot a
red-tail as I drive around the west (and I probably make my passengers a little
spooked my that :) ) . I like the light contrast on this pastel. I begin my pastels
with the eye and build out from there. This hawk wears a bit of nearly all the
colors in the palette!

Long ago, I had the pleasure to learn from
and work with Mr. Dave Siddon, while
volunteering at the Oregon Zoo. Dave had a
special bond with one of the Golden Eagles,
Phoenix. Phoenix always called out when
Dave was around, because he thought Dave
was his parent. This is my tribute to
Phoenix and Dave. Two Oregon Originals!

This Bald Eagle was a treat to draw. I especially enjoyed working on the incredible,
focused eye, set deep under it's eyebrow and the smooth, almost metallic beak. Talk about
a creature built to see and hold on to its food. The feathers were such a soft contrast and I
loved building the chocolaty depths of the neck and chest feathers.

Bald Eagles - Focus & Intensity defined! I love these classy citizens of the sky and water.
These guys are some of my favorite neighbors in the park. On Yellowstone Lake, they fish
for the native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout and sometimes knock a Barrow's Golden Eye
duck out of the sky for a change of meal choice. Scan the shoreline and rivers for these
majestic birds. When drawing this, I enjoyed using lots of curvy lines and the softness of
the pastels to create depth.
